32 – Why I Pursued a Non-Traditional Residency and Why I’m So Excited to Pivot into a Specialty Pharmacy Role (REWIND)

Allow me to re-introduce myself! On today’s episode, we’re rewinding to episode 1, where I chat about why I pursued a non-traditional residency, what that even means, and the exciting opportunity afforded to me at my current institution.

In case you guys didn’t already know, I earned my Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of the Sciences, formally known as Philadelphia College of Pharmacy in 2009. Following graduation, I became a Clinical Pharmacist at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD.

Five years into my clinical practice, I was eager to learn more, so I chose to pursue an ASHP accredited non-traditional pharmacy residency and in 2014 became the first (and only to date) non-traditional pharmacy resident at The Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Post-residency, I landed a job at another large academic institution as a Lead Pharmacist. Three years later I accepted a position as a Clinical Pharmacy Manager in a Specialty pharmacy within a large academic institution.

  1. Thanks for sharing your story. You sound passionate about your career and your journey. Kudos to you for creating this podcast and being transparent and vulnerable. Would you consider interviewing some “seasoned” black female pharmacists (those who graduated in the 1970-1990s) who have walked the journey you described? You could get into work-life balance; advice for younger self; sexism/racism/imposter syndrome; professionalism, etc. A perspective of a Gen X or Baby Boomer and their tips would be invaluable.

    1. Hi Helen! Of course I would love to interview seasoned pharmacists! Please reach out via the contact form on the website. If you have a story to share, we want to hear it!
